To be eligible to create Renewable Electricity Guarantee of Origin (REGO) certificates:

  • you must own or operate an eligible facility
  • your facility must generate or dispatch electricity using eligible renewable energy sources
  • you must be a fit and proper person (checked when you enrol).

You can transfer and retire REGO certificates, even if you don’t own or operate a facility, by enrolling as a registered person.

Eligible facility types

The following are eligible facility types under the REGO:

  • accredited power stations
  • electricity generation systems
  • energy storage systems
  • aggregated systems (not available yet).

Eligible energy storage systems

For an energy storage system to be eligible, the Future Made in Australia (Guarantee of Origin) Rules 2025 (GO Rules) include guidelines for what components to include in the facility’s record.

This covers the following kinds of energy storage systems:

  • battery
  • compressed gas
  • thermal
  • kinetic
  • gravitational
  • pumped hydro.

Eligible renewable energy sources

The following are eligible renewable energy sources under the REGO:

  • hydro
  • wave
  • tide
  • ocean
  • wind
  • solar
  • geothermal aquifer
  • hot dry rock
  • energy crops other than biomass from a native forest
  • wood waste
  • agricultural waste
  • waste from processing of agricultural products
  • food waste
  • food processing waste
  • bagasse
  • black liquor
  • biomass-based components of municipal solid waste
  • landfill gas
  • sewage gas and biomass-based components of sewage.

If your facility uses any of these sources to generate electricity, you can apply to register your facility to create REGO certificates. You can register a facility that generates or stores electricity from multiple sources.

Biomass guidance

We’re developing guidance to help you understand eligibility of biomass fuel sources. We’ll publish the guidance documents on this page once they’re ready.

For more information on energy sources and their definitions, read the GO Rules

Ineligible energy sources

The following are ineligible energy sources under the REGO:

  • fossil fuels
  • materials or waste products derived from fossil fuels
  • biomass from a native forest.

If your facility uses both eligible renewable energy sources and other sources, you may be eligible to register the facility and create REGO certificates. However, you’ll be required to exclude electricity generated from ineligible sources in the manner set out in the GO Rules and Future Made in Australia (Guarantee of Origin) Measurement Standard 2025.
