Claim your large-scale generation certificates (LGCs) for eligible generation before 31 December 2022 to make sure they are the right certificate vintage for the February 2023 RET liability surrender deadline. LGCs of the right vintage may trade at a premium during the first 6 weeks of the new year as liable entities seek last minute certificates.
Certificates created on or before 31 December 2022 will be of the 2022 vintage. Certificates created from 1 January 2023 onwards, even for generation that occurred in 2022, are 2023 vintage and cannot be used for the February 2023 RET liability surrenders.
What you can do to maximise your certificates
Here are 2 simple things you can do as the nominated person for a registered power station to ensure you have all the 2022 vintage LGCs you are entitled to:
- Log in to the REC Registry and ensure you have entered generation data for the year to date, and that you have created all eligible LGCs. Please remember that you can only create LGCs for actual generation that has already occurred.
- Check that you have completed your 2021 generation and LGC claims. From 1 January 2023, power stations are no longer allowed to claim LGCs for 2021 generation.
Create your LGCs now in the REC Registry
Demand for 2022 vintage LGCs
Maximising the availability of LGCs with the correct vintage will support industry to meet legislated demand. The Clean Energy Regulator's Quarterly Carbon Market Report states the tight supply and demand balance will continue longer for the next several years primarily due to strong growth in the voluntary market.
Electricity generation returns
The annual electricity generation returns (EGRs) opened for accredited power stations on 1 November 2022. The steps to maximise your certificates will help you submit your EGR by the due date.
