To be compliant with the 2021 soil carbon method, soil testing must follow the requirements of the method. Laboratory technicians play an important role in this process, as non-compliance can prevent ACCU crediting. A proponent could lose 5 years of ACCUs if the baseline soil sampling and testing is invalid.

We have created simplified posters for laboratory technicians to easily see the steps to follow for:

  • sample preparation
  • dry combustion analysis.

These posters are based on Figure 3 and Figure 4 from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water's Supplement to the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming – Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models) Methodology Determination 2021.

Soil testing requirements

Standard laboratory soil testing procedures may be different from the testing requirements for the 2021 soil carbon method.
It’s important to check your current procedures against the sample preparation and dry combustion analysis procedures for soil carbon projects to ensure testing is compliant with method requirements.
