We’ve made it easier for our participants to verify their identity when registering for multiple schemes.

Now participants in the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) Scheme, the Guarantee of Origin (GO) Scheme, and holders of Australian National Registry of Emissions Units (ANREU) accounts only need to verify their identity once when registering for more than one of these schemes.

Processes for these schemes now align with the Australian Government’s Document Verification Service (DVS), meaning we can accept recently expired (not cancelled) passports as valid identity documents.

This is a result of the 2024 consultation on proposed changes to our identity verification requirements. Stakeholders told us the process should be simpler. We’ve listened and have started making improvements.

The Government recently amended the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Rule 2015 and the Australian National Registry of Emissions Units Regulations 2011 to enable these changes.

These changes don’t currently apply to schemes with different identification and participation requirements. The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) Scheme and the Safeguard Mechanism don’t involve proof of personal identity. However, organisations participating in Safeguard may need to hold an ANREU account, which requires identity verification. The Renewable Energy Target currently requires a different mix of identity documents that still need re-verification.

We’ll continue to align identity verification processes across schemes to reduce duplication and improve efficiency. For the latest information, see our identity requirements.
