Tesla has issued a voluntary product safety recall for certain Powerwall 2 home batteries.
The ACCC manages a national recalls system for consumer products and has a role in supporting state and territory regulators to monitor electrical equipment recalls.
More information about this recall, including next steps for affected households, can be found on the ACCC website.
Solar battery eligibility under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES)
Solar batteries became eligible under the SRES on 1 July 2025. The Tesla Powerwall 2 battery is not an eligible solar battery under the SRES. This recall shows that established regulatory systems are working effectively to keep consumers safe and safety issues are managed quickly.
Regulators working together
We work closely with regulators and other bodies including the ACCC, state and territory safety and electrical regulators, the Clean Energy Council (CEC) and Solar Accreditation Australia. Our processes and scheme infrastructure support these regulatory bodies in their roles to ensure:
- products and installations are safe and meet standards for electrical safety
- the people designing, selling and installing solar batteries are qualified and properly accredited.
The CEC publishes recall notices for products that have been approved previously and maintains a list of approved solar batteries that are eligible under the SRES.
