Towards the end of 2024, we released the ‘Enabling deep, liquid, transparent and accessible carbon markets in Australia’ consultation paper to help prioritise functions and features for the new Unit and Certificate Registry and a carbon exchange.
We received 35 submissions from a wide range of stakeholders. The feedback supported transparent, secure and easy-to-access systems to enable stakeholders to access Australia’s carbon markets.
There was strong support for:
- transparent access to co-benefit data related to units and certificates
- secure access via application programming interface (API) for increased efficiency, and enabling real-time analysis and trading
- the importance of a carbon exchange to enable more efficient trading.
Respondents identified issues and challenges with the proposed exchange trading model that need further consideration. This included possible alternative platforms and other options for exchange trading.
We'll continue to consult with our stakeholders and by around September 2025 develop a registry roadmap outlining priorities in further developing features and functions of the registry.
