Quarterly Carbon Market Report – September Quarter 2020

Highlights

Emissions Reduction Fund auction 11 purchased 7 million tonnes (Mt) of emissions reduction, the highest volume contracted since Auction 6 in 2017. Registrations surged by 44 to total 87 projects in 2020, more than double the number of projects registered in 2019.
Total new capacity of large-scale renewable projects financed in 2020 reached 2.5 gigawatts (GW), exceeding 2019 levels of 2.3 GW. 1.1 GW of projects reached financial close in Quarter 3 and a further 0.5 GW has since been committed.
On track to set a new record of 2.9 GW capacity for small-scale systems in 2020, up 34% from the previous record of 2.2 GW installed in 2019. A remarkable 750 MW is estimated to have been installed in Quarter 3 up 11% compared to Quarter 2 2020.
2.3 million LGCs were surrendered by the ACT government in Quarter 3 to meet its 100% renewable energy target for 2019-20. Certificate and unit surrenders by private, state and territory governments accounted for 16% of the total carbon market in 2019, up from 12% in 2018.
