The Nortongong Biodiversity Restoration Project has been registered under the Nature Repair Market scheme.

It is the third project to be registered and is located near Coonamble in north-west New South Wales. It aims to restore 968 hectares of cleared land through the replanting of native vegetation. These activities are expected to support the recovery of Weeping Myall open woodland ecosystem.

The project proponent, Wilga Farming, and the agent, Verdant Partners, intend to combine their Nature Repair Market project with carbon abatement activities under the Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) Scheme. These activities will use the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings method.

The viability of the project will be supported through the additional source of income generated by tradeable Australian carbon credit units (ACCUs).

This project demonstrates how landholders and farm operators can pursue biodiversity and carbon outcomes while continuing to use the land for agricultural production as the landholder plans to resume grazing once the plantings are established.
