About

The Australian Government has announced it will be establishing a national technical regulator for consumer energy resources, also known as distributed energy resources.

We are preparing to take on this role, which will be responsible for ensuring new consumer energy devices meet national requirements in interoperability and can connect and operate effectively as part of the electricity system.

The national technical regulatory framework, which includes the scope and function of the national technical regulator, is being developed by the Department of Climate Change, the Environment, Energy and Water.

Subject to legislation, it is expected the department will lead the development of technical requirements, and we will administer the scheme and its compliance.

Why is this important?

Australians are increasingly generating and storing more of their own energy. As more devices connect to the electricity system, consistent interoperability technical requirements will support reliable operation and better device integration.

The new national framework is a key reform to modernising Australia’s economy by improving productivity and increasing competition across our energy ecosystem. It will empower consumers to maximise the benefits of their own energy systems and potentially enter the national electricity market if they choose.

A stable, integrated electricity grid is essential for incorporating the rapidly growing share of supply generated by consumer energy resources and achieving our target of 82% renewables by 2030.

This framework for consumer energy resources is intended to establish the national technical regulator and support nationally consistent interoperable technical requirements.
