Statement: TAI paper on Carbon Capture and Storage

The Australia Institute (TAI) discussion paper (published 8 December, 2021) on the Santos Moomba carbon capture and storage project makes a number of false and misleading claims.

The paper incorrectly suggests the Moomba Carbon Capture and Storage project registered under the Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF) is ineligible under the method because Santos plans to conduct enhanced gas recovery at Moomba.

Australia reaches the 3 million solar milestone

We have known for a while that Australians love solar power and this week Australia reached a milestone of 3 million small-scale solar systems installed on rooftops. That’s more than 1 in 4 houses and many non-residential buildings which have installed solar in Australia.

This milestone highlights that the solar PV sector is going from strength to strength and has recorded 30% growth year on year from 2017 to 2020.

ERAC releases analytic report on Human Induced Regeneration method

The Emissions Reduction Assurance Committee commissioned analytical work to examine several concerns raised about the Emissions Reduction Fund’s Human Induced Regeneration (HIR) method (Human-induced regeneration of a permanent even-aged native forest methodology determination). The Committee found that the evidence from robust analysis does not support these concerns.

Consultation open: Biomethane under the Emissions Reduction Fund

The Emissions Reduction Assurance Committee is seeking stakeholder submissions on the draft biomethane method package under the Emissions Reduction Fund.

Biomethane projects can earn carbon credits for the abatement that occurs when methane is converted to carbon dioxide, a less potent greenhouse gas, and when it is used as a substitute for natural gas.

The biomethane package includes proposed variations to three waste methods:
