The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) scheme is a single national framework for corporations to report greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption and production. This covers about 60 per cent of Australia’s total emissions. Emissions from the agricultural, forestry, private vehicle transport and residential sectors are not collected under the NGER scheme and therefore not included in this data.
The state and territory emissions profile outlines details of the highest emitting industries for each state and territory in 2018–19.
Highest emitting industries by state
In 2018-19, electricity generation remained the highest emitting industry in Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales and the ACT. Manufacturing was again the highest emitting industry in Tasmania. Oil and gas extraction continued to be the highest emitting industry in Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
Industry groupings in this profile are based on the ANZSIC subdivisions.
