Under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 the Clean Energy Regulator publishes a point-in-time extract of electricity sector emissions and generation data each year.
Electricity generation and scope 1 emissions 2015–2018
Emissions in the electricity generation sector have decreased over the last three years. There was a notable reduction of -5.0 Mt CO2-e (-2.8 per cent) in 2016–17, and -6.8 Mt CO2-e (-3.8 per cent) in 2017–18 on the previous reporting year.
Reported emissions reductions in the electricity generation sector in these years are largely due to the closure of the Hazelwood Power station in 2017, and changes in the national energy mix—with more electricity generation from fuel sources with a lower emissions intensity, such as renewables.
The Clean Energy Regulator expects that the national energy mix will continue to evolve. A further increase in renewables generation is expected to appear in future years’ National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting data as newly installed capacity comes online.
