The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) is holding public consultation on proposed updates to the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) Scheme.
Proposed amendments include:
- introduction of the optional, supplementary reporting of ‘market-based scope 2’ emissions (emissions associated with the consumption of electricity)
- an update to the Method 1 emissions factor used to calculate ‘scope 1’ emissions from Queensland open cut mines
- an update to Method 1 for the estimation of methane released from landfills (other than from flaring of methane), and
- creation of two new fuel types, renewable paraffinic diesel, and renewable paraffinic kerosene.
The amendments are proposed to commence on 1 July 2023 and would apply to NGER reports submitted by 31 October 2024 for the 2023–24 NGER reporting year. The amendments would not affect reports to be submitted by 31 October 2023 for the 2022–23 reporting year.
Submissions on the proposed amendments are invited by Friday 28 April 2023. Please visit DCCEEW’s consultation hub for more information, including how to make a submission.
