100 millionth ACCU issued to Indigenous business

Today the Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction announced that over 100 million Australian carbon credit units (ACCUs) have now been issued under the Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF).

The 100 millionth ACCU was issued to the Wilinggin Fire Project, a savanna burning project located on the Wilinggin Indigenous Protected Area in the Kimberley in Northern Western Australia.

This follows last week’s milestone with the ERF registering its 1000th project.

One ACCU is issued for every tonne of emissions stored or avoided to eligible projects under the ERF. This means that ERF project participants have collectively contributed to achieving over 100 million tonnes of carbon abatement across Australia.

ACCUs are issued to eligible participants by the Clean Energy Regulator on behalf of the Australian Government. The ACCUs can then be sold to the Australian Government or to businesses and other private purchasers.
