The Clean Energy Regulator has today released the 2018–19 National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting data.
Each year, Australian corporations that meet certain thresholds are required to report their emissions and energy information to us. This data helps inform government policy and programs and meet Australia’s international reporting obligations.
For the 2018–19 year, corporations reported a total of 338 million tonnes of scope 1 greenhouse gas emissions. This represents an overall increase in emissions of 1.3 million tonnes (0.4 per cent) on adjusted totals for the previous year.
This result includes reported scope 1 emissions increase of 8 million tonnes in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) and oil and gas production sectors (largely due to new and increased production in Western Australia and the Northern Territory).
Notably, reported scope 1 emissions in the electricity sector decreased by 4.8 million tonnes compared to 2017-18. This decrease is largely due to increased use of renewable generation coupled with less use of brown coal and improved efficiency from some black coal generators.
The data also reports 88 million tonnes of scope 2 emissions and 3931 petajoules of net energy consumed.
Comparing published data between years
It is important to note that information published as part of the 2018–19 NGER dataset cannot be directly compared to publications from previous years for a range of reasons, including updates made to totals to account for report resubmissions. We take all reasonable efforts to ensure the information published on its website is accurate at the time of publication.
