An emissions-intensive trade-exposed (EITE) entity is a company that carries out EITE activities at one or more sites.
Entities that conduct eligible EITE activities can apply for exemption certificates under the Renewable Energy Target (RET).
EITE entities issued an exemption certificate can negotiate a benefit (usually lower electricity costs) with the liable entity, usually their electricity retailer.
Liable entities use exemption certificates to decrease the number of large-scale generation certificates (LGCs) and small-scale technology certificates (STCs) they are required to surrender to meet their RET liability obligations.
EITE entities must apply for exemption certificates on an annual basis to be eligible.
