What is the Nature Repair Market?

The Nature Repair Market is a voluntary national market. It encourages people and businesses to invest in projects that restore and protect our natural environment.

The Nature Repair Market will deliver improved biodiversity outcomes, for example, by:

  • re-establishing vegetation along waterways
  • keeping pests and feral species from destroying native species and ecosystems.

Participants can carry out projects on Australian land, waters or a combination of both.

Biodiversity Market Register

When the Nature Repair Market launches, the Biodiversity Market Register will detail the projects being run in Australia and the biodiversity certificates that have been issued.

How it works

When the market opens in 2025, people who are interested in registering projects must apply to the Clean Energy Regulator. Applicants will need to demonstrate that the project will:

  • implement an approved method
  • comply with the requirements expected of projects
  • likely deliver improved biodiversity outcomes.

Project participants who run successful projects can apply for one biodiversity certificate to be issued for each project. These certificates can then be sold to private buyers to generate income or deposited with the Australian Government. Certificates held by the Australian Government would still be in effect and represent a commitment to the project but could not be further transferred or sold.

Similar to the Australian Carbon Credit Unit Scheme, the Nature Repair Market will have methodology determinations (methods) that outline the rules for eligible projects. These methods are being developed with experts and other stakeholders through collaborative processes led by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. Methods will also be reviewed by the Nature Repair Committee.

Who can participate

Eligible participants in the scheme include:

  • landholders
  • First Nations people and organisations
  • conservation groups
  • farmers.

Our role

We are building our capability and establishing new systems and processes to launch the market in 2025. We will administer the market by:

  • providing information and guidance for participants
  • registering biodiversity projects, and provide access to our systems
  • assessing and verifying project reports
  • issuing biodiversity certificates
  • maintaining the Biodiversity Market Register of projects and certificates issued, traded and cancelled
  • publishing information to support the market.

We're working closely with the department to set up the Nature Repair Market. The department oversees the policy. For more information, see Nature Repair Market on the department’s website.

Legislative framework

Nature Repair Committee

The Minister for the Environment and Water, with support from the department, appointed a committee to consider methods, biodiversity assessment instruments and more. Read about the Nature Repair Committee members on the department’s website.
